Can I Build My Own Fire Pit?

Yes you can build your own fire pit in your backyard or outdoor space.

I’m all about that DIY life. BUT is building your own fire pit cost-effective? Is it worth the effort and time?

Will it last as long?

I’m not going to attempt to tell you the steps on how to go about building one – I’m sure you can find videos on YouTube for that. I’m here to break down the general materials you need the estimated costs the estimated time and effort and ultimately if it is worth it.

What Do I Need To Build A Fire Pit

You have two routes to take:

  1. Buy Fire Pit Kit: Typically comes with all the necessary components to build one including fire pit liner or insert a burner gas hose and regulator if gas-powered cap or lid if wood-burning other accessories and INSTRUCTIONS for assembly and installation – some kits actually include the bricks stones or pavers
  2. No Fire Pit Kit: You’ll need to buy the materials separately and cut/shape them

Depending on which route you take you would need the below as well:

  1. Shovel (or tools to dig and level the ground)
  2. Sand or gravel for drainage (assuming not included in fire pit kit)
  3. Fire bricks fire-proof mortar or volcanic rock (assuming not included in fire pit kit)
  4. Concrete pavers (assuming not included in fire pit kit)
  5. Fire pit cover (assuming not included in fire pit kit)
  6. Safety equipment such as gloves goggles and a dust mask
  7. Fire Extinguisher or buckets of water in case something goes wrong

What Are Those Materials For?

  • Bricks Stones Rocks: Build the wall of the fire pit
  • Concrete Pavers: Create safe and stable surface around pit
  • Metal Fire Ring or Insert: Contain fire and prevent it from spreading
  • Sand or Gravel: Base for pit and help with drainage

How Much Will These Fire Pit Materials Cost?

It depends – on what materials you use the size and design of your fire pit and the location of it. Without a fire pit kit you will typically need to purchase materials such as bricks gravel stone fire-resistant materials and extra tools.

These itself can range from a couple hundred to a couple thousand.

If you opt for a fire pit kit it would typically include all the necessary materials and instructions to build one. These would also vary in price as well but you save on those additional tools and excess materials since they would be pre-cut and shaped already for you.

The average cost to build a fire pit ranges from $500 to $2500.

How Much Time And Effort Will Building The Fire Pit Take?

It is best to have at least two people building the fire pit. On average it can take anywhere from a few hours to a full day to properly build a fire pit.

You will have to dig and level a space in your outdoor area before starting. Then lay the foundation and finally start building the walls of the fire pit.

Get ready for some manual labor and heavy lifting. Don’t hurt your back!

How Long Does My DIY Fire Pit Last?

It depends! If you built it using high-quality and durable materials it can last for several years.

Note that you have to properly maintain it as well. Construction is also something to keep in mind.

If you constructed and built it properly your DIY fire pit can last just as long as a purchased one.

PROPERLY is the key word.

Should I Build My Own Fire Pit?
