Yes you can build your own fire pit in your backyard or outdoor space.
I’m all about that DIY life. BUT is building your own fire pit cost-effective? Is it worth the effort and time?
Will it last as long?
I’m not going to attempt to tell you the steps on how to go about building one – I’m sure you can find videos on YouTube for that. I’m here to break down the general materials you need the estimated costs the estimated time and effort and ultimately if it is worth it.
You have two routes to take:
Depending on which route you take you would need the below as well:
It depends – on what materials you use the size and design of your fire pit and the location of it. Without a fire pit kit you will typically need to purchase materials such as bricks gravel stone fire-resistant materials and extra tools.
These itself can range from a couple hundred to a couple thousand.
If you opt for a fire pit kit it would typically include all the necessary materials and instructions to build one. These would also vary in price as well but you save on those additional tools and excess materials since they would be pre-cut and shaped already for you.
The average cost to build a fire pit ranges from $500 to $2500.
It is best to have at least two people building the fire pit. On average it can take anywhere from a few hours to a full day to properly build a fire pit.
You will have to dig and level a space in your outdoor area before starting. Then lay the foundation and finally start building the walls of the fire pit.
Get ready for some manual labor and heavy lifting. Don’t hurt your back!
It depends! If you built it using high-quality and durable materials it can last for several years.
Note that you have to properly maintain it as well. Construction is also something to keep in mind.
If you constructed and built it properly your DIY fire pit can last just as long as a purchased one.
PROPERLY is the key word.
DIY Fire Pit | Buy Fire Pit | |
---|---|---|
Pros | – Can customize to your own preference – Can be more cost-effective | – Ready to use no assembly required – Typically more durable and long-lasting than DIY |
Cons | – Time and effort required – Materials and tools needed – If not built properly won’t last that long | – Typically more expensive – Can’t customize to the extent of your DIY |
Heck why not build your own and buy one and see which one lasts longer. I would love to see pictures if you go with this route.
