How to Move a Swing Set: Strategies for Relocating With Ease

Maybe you’re moving and want to take your high-quality set with you. Or perhaps you just want to push it a few feet across the yard.

Either way, your best bet is to get professional movers to tackle the entire process. There are too many parts that can get broken or lost along the way!

However, if you’re adamant about doing it yourself, this post will help you figure out how to move a swing set with little to no damage.

Moving a Swing Set Over a Long Distance

Here’s how to manage a swing set on your moving checklist:

Take Photos

Unless you have the manual, we’d recommend taking photos to use later as a guide when you’re reassembling the set.

The key is to be as thorough as possible, so snap photos of bolts, anchors, and all the accessories.

    Grab WD-40

If your beloved swing has been out there for years, it most likely has some rusted bits.

Before you proceed any further, spray a solvent to help loosen those stuck bolts.

      Disassemble the Set

Start with the small attachments, like the swing seats, chains, and monkey bars. Now, roll these parts in bubble wrap or other protective covering and set them in your moving truck.

As you make your way to the more complicated pieces, losing bolts and nuts gets easier. To avoid this, try one of the following tricks:

        • Fasten the bolts back in place.
        • Use labeled bags to keep track of which hardware goes where.
        Load up the Actual Swing

Some people rent a U-Haul so they don’t have to break down the entire swing. However, a truck might do the trick.

That said, if your set has a wood fort, you’ll want to load it first. A dolly, a ramp, a sheet of plywood, and a few helping hands will make the process much easier.

Don’t forget to secure the playset parts with cords!

          Reassemble the Set

When you arrive at your new home, start unloading the playset.

Unlike the disassembly step, the assembly process should begin with the main structures and bulky items. If you feel lost, refer to the photos you took earlier.

Moving a Swing Set Across the Yard

If you only need to change the backyard layout, you might be able to move the set without fully disassembling it.

Here are two approaches to consider:

            Rolling Over Pipes

To shift a large swing set, remove the small accessories and leave the main fort intact. Then, shove PVC pipes under it to sort ofwheel it around.

You’ll need two people to push it, but it should be fairly easier than a full disassembly.

            Using a Balance Beam

There’s anifty trick for moving simple yet heavy wooden swing sets. Just lodge a slightly angled timber at the center point of the frame.

When two people on either side lift the frame, the timber balances the entire swing off the ground. This way, you’ll be able to move the set further without actually doing a lot of heavy lifting.

            Final Thoughts

Swing set relocation isn’t always the best way to go.

If the frame is in bad condition, it might be easier and more cost-efficient to leave it behind and buy a new set.
