Too Many Options for Grills. Why and Which Outdoor Home Grill is Best?

Shopping for grills can be time consuming. Without the proper research you can find yourself replacing your grill at least 5x in your life.

Grills come in different shapes and sizes – and let’s not forget about the different fuel types.

Why? People have different preferences and needs when it comes to grilling.

Things To Consider For Outdoor Home Grill Fuel Sources

The most common grill fuel sources are natural gas liquid propane and charcoal. Electric isn’t that popular yet but it is convenient.

Before you go deciding on which one there are some things to consider when determining which fuel source is best for you.

Fuel Source Flavor Convenience Location Cleaning & Maintenance Cost Safety
Natural Gas Low High Close to Natural Gas source Low Low to Medium High
Liquid Propane Low Medium Anywhere Medium Medium High
Charcoal High Low Anywhere High Low Medium
  • Flavor: Charcoal grills are known for their unique smoky flavor – get that charcoal char in! Gas grills do not produce that same flavor.
  • Convenience: Gas grills are the most convenient. You will get consistent and immediate heat to start cooking. You can also control the temperature. Charcoal grills…well you have to start the fire and this will require more time and attention. Getting it to your desired temperature on Charcoal grills will take practice.
  • Location: For natural gas grills you need to connect it to a natural gas source/line. So you are limited in where you can put this. For propane gas grills or charcoal you can virtually put it anywhere – they are more versatile in that sense. They are fueled by a propane tank and charcoal.
  • Cleaning & Maintenance: Natural gas grills are the easiest to clean and maintain since they don’t produce ash or require refilling of propane tank. Charcoal grills are the hardest to clean – after each use it can get messy and you need to clean the ash. For propane gas it’s not as bad since no ash but you still need to keep track of your propane gas and make sure it is filled.
  • Cost: Charcoal grills are relatively inexpensive to its gas grill counterparts. But they do require more maintenance. Side note that gas grills typically last longer than charcoal grills so take that into account when calculating costs. You may just net to the same place at the end.
  • Safety: Charcoal grills can pose a fire risk if not used properly. Gas grills are generally safe as long as used properly.

Types Of Outdoor Home Grill Materials & Build

Many may not think about the actual material and build but this is very important. The material will impact the overall performance and lifespan of your grill.

Here’s why:

Material Durability Ease of cleaning Heat retention/
distribution
Weight Price
Stainless steel High High Medium Heavy High
Porcelain-coated steel Medium High Medium Medium Medium
Aluminum High High High Light Low to Medium
Cast iron High Medium High Heavy Low

Specific grills within each category can have variations. The above table is just a general guideline.

You would have to look at the quality thickness of the material used and the level of craftsmanship. Good thing Amplify Your Home did that research for you!

You want grills that are durable easy to clean holds heat and distributes evenly — the weight will depend on you.

Types Of Outdoor Home Grill Sizes

Grill sizes will not be as technical as the fuel type or materials. In essence the size of the grill will impact the cooking surface area.

One thing to consider is the amount of space you have to put the grill.

  • Small Grills: Tend to have a cooking area of about 200 square inches and can feed 1-4 people — ideal for small patios or balconies.
  • Medium Grills: Tend to have a cooking area of about 400-500 square inches and can feed 4-8 people — ideal for small to medium-sized families or for hosting small parties
  • Large Grills: Tend to have a cooking area of 600 square inches or more can can feed 8 or more people (don’t forget to invite me) — ideal for large families or hosting large parties and events

Types Of Outdoor Home Grill Shapes

Grill shapes is where you can put a piece of your personality into. But it is not just about the looks – it is also about functionality.

  • Rectangle Grills: Most common Large cooking area — can accommodate wide variety of accessories and attachments
  • Round Grills: More compact and portable
  • Square Grills: Large cooking area — can accommodate wide variety of accessories and attachments

Key Outdoor Home Grill Features

  • Cooking Surface: This is where you will place your food to be cooked. This dictates how much food you can cook at one time. Look at for material because that will affect the flavor of the food. Porcelain-coasted cast iron grates gives a nice sear BUT stainless steel grates are easier to clean and maintain.
  • Temperature Control: Many come with a built-in thermometer and some have digital controls to let you set the temperature exactly to your likings.
  • Ignition System: This is used to start the grill. Most either uses a match or battery-powered ignition. You want a reliable and easy-to-use ignition system.
  • Side Shelves: These are handy — provides additional space for food preparation and storage.
  • Storage: If you have limited outdoor space this is important. Some grills have built-in storage space like a bottom shelf or cabinet under the grill.
